Fair Trade Labeling Global Gallery Online: (www.globalgalleryonline.org) Transfair fair trade logo transfairlogo.gif 6.08 Kb Fair Trade labelling  was created in response to the request of coffee farmers in southern Mexico.  In 1986 they told the development co-operation organization Solidaridad that instead of aid they needed trade.  Working in partnership with the farmers, the first Fair trade Label was created in the Netherlands two years later. Today, there are 17 Fair trade Labeling Organizations that included initiatives in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, USA and Japan. - The Fair Trade Certified label guarantees that farmers and workers received a fair price for their product. The Fair Trade price means that farmers can feed their families and that their children can go to school instead of working in the fields. - By receiving a fair price, Fair Trade producers can avoid cost-cutting practices that sacrifice quality. The Fair Trade producers' traditional artisan farming methods result in exceptional products. - Most Fair Trade Certified coffee, tea and chocolate in the US is certified organic and shade grown. This means that the products you buy maintain biodiversity, provide shelter for migratory birds and help reduce global warming.
